Future development of rolling bearings for industrial machinery(1)

NTN offers a wide range of bearing sizes to meet the needs of various applications in the industrial machinery market. These range from ultra-small bearings with an outside diameter of a few millimeters for electronic equipment to very large bearings with an outside diameter of several meters for wind turbines and large mining machinery. In addition to existing customers in the “core” industrial markets of construction machinery, agricultural machinery and machine tools, business is also increasing with customers related to social infrastructure. As the structure of society changes and awareness of environmental issues increases, so does the demand from customers in the aircraft, railroad vehicle and wind turbine markets. As a result, NTN has developed corresponding engineering and production systems. The current environment is expected to change significantly due to advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This report describes the advances in NTN’s analysis and evaluation technologies and NTN’s approach to improving bearing performance and reliability.
1. Introduction
In pictures of Egypt drawn thousands of years ago, people transported rocks by means of rollers placed underneath them. This is the origin of rolling bearings (hereafter referred to as “bearings”).
It is also believed that the Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci invented the basic principles and structure of modern bearings. Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings of bearings are almost identical to the structure of bearings used today.
It has been about 100 years since NTN began manufacturing bearings. The appearance and components are almost the same as then. However, the performance of the components has improved significantly due to advances in materials, lubricants and machining technology. Nowadays, bearings are indispensable mechanical components for equipment.
This paper reviews the development of bearings in the fields of steel manufacturing methods, manufacturing technology, and design technology. In addition, NTN’s progress in analysis and evaluation technologies, and initiatives to improve reliability are presented.
The paper also describes approaches to modular and intelligent components through the integration of forward-looking bearing technologies, sensing technologies, and precision control technologies, as well as new products and services through fault detection, condition monitoring systems (CMS), and the Internet of Things.
