Why choose rolling bearings?
Rolling bearings support and guide rotating or oscillating machine components – such as shafts, axles or wheels – with minimum friction and transmit loads between them. Rolling bearings have high precision and low friction properties, so high rotational speeds can be achieved while reducing noise, heat, energy consumption and wear. These bearings are cost-effective and are typically interchangeable machine components that meet national or international dimensional standards.
Ball and Roller Bearings
Two basic types of rolling bearings are distinguished by two basic types of rolling elements:
ball → ball bearing
Roller → Roller Bearing
The difference between a ball and a roller is the way it makes contact with the raceway.
The balls make point contact with the raceway of the bearing ring. As more and more loads are applied to the bearing, the contact point becomes an elliptical area. The smaller the contact area, the smaller the rolling friction, which enables the ball bearing to adapt to high-speed operation, but limits its load-carrying capacity.
The rollers make line contact with the raceway of the bearing ring. As more and more loads are applied to the bearing, the line of contact becomes somewhat rectangular. Due to the larger contact area and the resulting higher friction, roller bearings can accommodate heavier loads but at lower speeds than ball bearings of the same size.
Radial and Thrust Bearings
Rolling bearings are divided into two categories according to the direction of the main load:
radial bearing
Radial bearings can accommodate loads perpendicular to the shaft. Some radial bearings can only bear pure radial loads, while most radial bearings can also bear axial loads in one direction, and in some cases, can also bear axial loads in two directions.
Thrust bearings
Thrust bearings mainly bear loads along the axial direction. Depending on the design, thrust bearings can support purely axial loads in one or both directions, but some can additionally accommodate radial loads (combined loads). Thrust bearings cannot achieve as high speeds as radial bearings of the same size.
The contact angle determines which category the bearing belongs to. Bearings with a contact angle ≤ 45° are radial bearings, others are thrust bearings.
